Model history and generations

Model history: years and generations

This page covers the L663 generation, on sale since 2020. It launched as the four-door Defender 110, quickly joined by the short two-door Defender 90 and, from 2023, the long eight-seat Defender 130. A high-performance Defender OCTA sits at the top of the range.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines, transmissions and drive

US Defenders are petrol. The entry P300 uses a 2.0-litre turbo four (296 hp). The popular P400 pairs a 3.0-litre inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an electric supercharger for 395 hp and strong, smooth response.

Equipment lines and body styles

Body styles are 90 (two-door), 110 (four-door) and 130 (long, three-row). Trims in the US include S, SE, X-Dynamic, the luxurious X and various special editions, with options such as the Explorer and Adventure accessory packs, off-road tyres, electronic rear differential and towing gear.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The US used market

Supply has grown steadily since 2020. Typical import candidates are 2021-2024 P400 110s with 15,000 to 60,000 miles, plus a smaller pool of 90s and V8 cars. Because the Defender is a lifestyle SUV, many US examples are lightly used and richly optioned.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Common issues buyers should know

The L663 is far more refined than the old Defender but is a complex, technology-heavy vehicle. Early cars had Pivi Pro software glitches, occasional connectivity dropouts and 12-volt battery drain from systems staying awake; updates addressed much of this, so a car on current software is preferable.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

Differences from the European version

US Defenders use amber-integrated indicators, a rear cluster without a separate rear fog lamp, and mph instruments. Headlights follow the US beam pattern.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Typical work: adding a rear fog lamp, adapting or replacing headlights to the ECE pattern, and documenting the odometer conversion from miles.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is the modern Defender reliable enough to import?

Later L663 cars on current software are much improved over early examples. Prioritise a documented dealer history and confirmed updates.

Which engine should I choose?

The P400 inline-six is the all-round pick; the P300 is the value entry; the V8 and OCTA are for buyers who want maximum performance.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Is the two-door Defender 90 harder to import?

No; it follows the same process. It is simply rarer on the US used market than the 110.

Will the air suspension pass TÜV?

Yes, provided it is fault-free and holds height correctly; a leaking system should be repaired first.

Can I get European navigation?

US maps ship by default; European navigation and connected services can normally be configured during preparation.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, driven mainly by ocean freight and inspection scheduling.

How can a specific Land Rover Defender be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
